You might know Shannon Fox as the interior-décor maven behind the mega-inspiring Instagram account @foxhollowcottage. If you’ve gotten some serious backyard envy from her posts, guess what? She’s got tips that’ll help you transform your own yard into a retreat that’s just as beautiful as hers. Here are some of our favorite tips from her blog.

Start with a clean slate. Before you start decorating your space with new planters, rugs, chairs and lights, get the space looking its best first. Hose down the patio to get rid of the mud, dirt and dust that accumulated over the months that it went unused; pull any weeds and throw away or recycle items you’re no longer using.
- Think safe and easy when it comes to dishes. If you’re anything like us, spring and summer mean grilling and outdoor dinners as often as possible. Avoid accidents by using unbreakable plates, bowls, glasses and serving dishes. Go for something that really suits your style.

Make your space inviting. This spring and summer, we’re all going to spending plenty of time in the backyard, so turning it into an inviting space is key. Arrange your seating to accommodate for conversation and allow your fire pit to take center stage. Next stop…cocktails and cribbage!
- Ambiance is everything. In addition to a flickering fire, Shannon loves to add atmosphere with battery-operated lanterns. They’re rustic-looking but easy to use and maintain. If you live in an area filled with biting, stinging insects, you’ll want to invest in citronella candles, too. Shannon likes to use tiki torches to keep mosquitos away.
